On Buying A Halloween Costume
even pretending
leaves me confused, like a dog
trapped on the subway.
curvy, colored masks never
suited me nor have
disguises ever hidden
me completely. I
can't quite comprehend the need
to shed, like snakeskin,
one's character to open
one's soul to the world.
forgo the cape and leave the
black spandex behind.
hiding your face just weakens
what you can offer.
don a smile the way you would
a golden halo
and the world may just believe
you are every
bit the saint you're carefully
attempting not to
be ever mistaken for.
