I Used To Be So Cute To Me, Just A Little Bit Skinny, Why Do I Look To All These Things, To Keep You Happy

--"Unpretty", TLC

On Buying A Halloween Costume

even pretending
leaves me confused, like a dog

trapped on the subway.
curvy, colored masks never

suited me nor have
disguises ever hidden

me completely. I
can't quite comprehend the need

to shed, like snakeskin,
one's character to open

one's soul to the world.
forgo the cape and leave the

black spandex behind.
hiding your face just weakens

what you can offer.
don a smile the way you would

a golden halo
and the world may just believe

you are every
bit the saint you're carefully

attempting not to
be ever mistaken for.
